We are beginning to see a trend of customers looking to solve the problem of managing end user applications. Traditionally, the IT department has provided a limited set of applications and has attempted to lock down access to install unmanaged applications. However, as people are becoming more tech savvy, they are looking into ways to provide the ability to use their own applications, yet still have some control over what is being installed.
While there is no single solution that will work for every organisation, one method features RES Software’s Workspace Manager which can control who can install applications. When an end user attempts to run a .MSI setup, a special elevation privilege is run which will either install the application or route a request for permission back to the IT department or line manager. This removes the need for those who do need the permissions to install applications to have local Administrator rights. Everything is fully audited and IT managers can set up specific white/black lists of trusted publishers.
